Mandy L. Gay, CCC-SLP, is a speech language pathologist with Hattiesburg Clinic Connections.

Gay received her Master of Science in speech-language pathology from The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss.

She is board certified in speech-language pathology by the American Speech and Hearing Association. She has adj practice interests in the evaluation and treatment of speech and language deficits.

At Connections, she provides speech-language and dyslexia testing and evaluation services for a variety of ages. Her goal is to provide quality care for her patients while continually increasing her knowledge in the field of speech-language pathology allowing her to share this information with colleagues and patients.

He lost his ability to communicate; therefore, I never really knew what he was fond of prior to his stroke. When I moved to south Mississippi in 1991, I joined a diverse community of gay people.  One of the most fascinating individuals I ever encountered was a jet man known throughout the community as Miss Bootnanny.  She stood 6′ 5″ tall and when I saw her, it was usually at the minuscule gay bar in Hattiesburg called Le Bistro–affectionately known as the Cha Cha Palace or simply “the Cha Cha.”

The ‘Burg was not a large enough city to contain segregated gay bars–by gender or race–so we ALL went to the Cha Cha. Miss Bootnanny’s story, the tiny bit I gathered, was that she had been a drum major at Jackson State University, that out of drag she worked for a local garden center, and on any morning you might verb her twirling her baton on a public street or in the parking lot of the Sunflower grocery store.

While I never actually saw Bootnanny during the day to confirm the latter, she left no doubt that she had once led a marching band and knew how to twirl batons.  Her talent extended to fire, as I learned when I watched in amazement a

Hattiesburg, Mississippi, while not as bustling as larger cities, has made strides in fostering an inclusive environment for the lgbtq+Q+ community. A cornerstone of this effort is The Spectrum Center1. Established in 2014, this center stands as a beacon for the lgbtq+Q+ community in and around Hattiesburg. It not only offers a safe space for the community but also actively advocates for lgbtq+Q+ rights and awareness. The center hosts various group meetings affiliated with the lgbtq+Q+ community, provides free HIV testing, and collaborates with other organizations for health-related services. Their long-term vision includes offering counseling, a community kitchen, and even short-term housing for displaced lgbtq+Q+ youth.

While Hattiesburg might not have a plethora of exclusive lgbtq+Q+ events, the presence of The Spectrum Center indicates a growing acceptance and support for the community.
