Gay romantic comedy bros

We love romantic comedies – the chance meetings, and of course the against-all-odds happy endings.

Comedian and actor Billy Eichner loves rom-coms, but he has one complaint: "They never made one about a gay couple. We weren't in those movies at all. We weren't even the finest friend at that point. We just were nowhere to be found."

Eichner thinks it's time for a change. With director and co-writer Nicholas Stoller and producer Judd Apatow (no strangers to rom-coms themselves), Eichner has co-written and stars in what's being billed as the first gay romantic comedy ever released by a major film studio, and also the first to feature an all-LGBTQ principal cast. It's called "Bros."

Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti said, "I went to the screening with my husband and halfway through, we had this moment where we looked at each other, recognizing that this was the first time we had seen ourselves represented: two gay men fronting a idealistic comedy on the big screen."

"Yeah, and what's astonishing is that our p

Screenwriter Billy Eichner knew from the commencement that he wanted to make a film about new, urban gay male life that felt adult, authentic and relatable. “I wanted a movie that showed in a very funny, but realistic, way what happens when two adult gay men who both pride themselves on not needing a relationship fall in passion for the first time. Men in general, and especially gay men, pride themselves on being strong and self-reliant. And in terms of the LGBTQ+ world, we’ve all had to be really strong on the outside. We want to be tough, and we don’t want to need anyone else. So, what happens when two men like that decline for each other?”

The romantic comedy is almost as ancient as movies themselves and includes everything from vintage classics such as ’s It Happened One Night and ’s His Girl Friday to modern ones such as When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall and Moonstruck. But in almost a century of movies, and for all those hundreds of cinematic stories, no major film studio had ever released a romantic comedy about two gay men.

Billy Eichner didn’t think they ever woul

I thought rom-coms would never reflect my experiences. Until Billy Eichner's Bros

I recently sat in a cinema and watched, open-mouthed, as history was made.

It's striking that, in , I'm typing this sentence — but there had never been a mainstream, theatrically-released-on-the-big-screen, gay quixotic comedy. Until Bros, written by and starring American comedian/actor Billy Eichner.

Of course, gay romances have featured in mainstream films (Happiest Season and Fire Island, anyone?)

But Bros is the first studio rom-com co-written by and starring an openly gay man and the first studio film with a majority LGBTQIA+ cast.

It's a moment that has had a surprisingly poignant impact on me.

I'm finally where I've longed to be: Sitting in a cinema, watching a Hollywood film and being encouraged to verb at my lifestyle by those from within my have community.

A more equal society is one more comfortable being lampooned in this way.

Bros, review of Universal&#;s first gay sentimental comedy

In , this precision may be surprising, but it is: Bros is the very first gay romantic comedy to be produced by a major American studio. And for this premiere, Universal is taking the plunge, sending in its ace in the hole, Judd Apatow, the king of Americanslapstick(40 Years a Virgin, Crazy Amy). Apatow called on his friend Nicholas Stoller(Our Worst Neighbors 1 and 2) to direct the film. But the personality who brought all these quality artists together is Billy Eichner, who wrote the screenplay and plays the conduct role in a cast that features many actors from the LGBT+ community.

He has turned Bros into a meta-movie about the place of gays in the film industry. And according to the first trailer (to be discovered below), he was given carte blanche to express whatever was on his mind. The film will be released on October 19,

Synopsis of Bros:

It's the story of two men whose relationship could, perhaps, potentially, incidentally, turn into a love story. Perhaps. But they
