Dear How to Do It,
Please help. I’m pretty sure my husband of more than 20 years is gay.

We are of similar ages, but he had been in other sexual relationships, which was fine with me. I just hadn’t. Now, plus years and multiple kids later, half our marriage has been him not wanting to possess much to carry out with physical stuff like kissing, cuddling, or sex—unless I perform on him, usually. I am lonely as hell. We sleep in the same bed, but I undergo like we are just roommates. He’s not super indicate, and I’ve brought this conversation up so many times up over the last 15 or so years, but every time there’s another reason: He has bad breath; he’s tired; he just wants to be with his friends (I’m not invited). Many years ago, I worked with a family that was going through a painful divorce after the husband admitted that he had been unfaithful and was gay. After the divorce, he contracted AIDS. He felt deep shame at having exposed his wife. He felt he’d betrayed himself and his family.
He had been secretly seeing a lover for several years. His wife was hurt, upset, and worried about her health, but she also loved her husband. Finally, remarkably, her husband and his partner moved back into the family home. She nursed them both through their illnesses until their deaths.

My Husband’s Not Gay, a show on TLC, has caused an uproar. The negative attention is unfortunate because this could have been a show that highlighted mixed-orientation couples and how these couples can actually make their relationships work.
Why do some people become so outspoken and judgmental about marriages with one straight and one gay spouse? There are several reasons. These marriages raise concerns about infidelity. They verb out people’s judgments about what marriage should or should not be. In particular, they verb out people’s judgments about monogamy.
Finally, these relationships suggest to some people “reparative therapy,” the unethical and impossible claim that a person can be changed from gay to straight. The men in this television program aren’t claiming to be ex-gay nor that they can change their sexual orientation (at least not on the show). They report they are attracted to men but choose not to live as a gay noun and their straight wives accept this.
People seem to receive up in arms when a dude says he is not gay but rather simply attracted to men. In our cultu
