There must have been something in the craft services table on the arrange of the ’70s drama Family. First Meredith Baxter, now co-star Kristy McNichol has come out as lesbian.
In an interview with People magazine, the year-old actress — who won Emmys for Family at ages 14 and 16 and later starred on the sitcom Empty Nest — said it was about period. About two years ago, Baxter, who played McNichol’s sister on the exhibit, also came out.
On Family, McNichol played Buddy, the tomboy youngest sibling. She was always something of a lesbian icon for her rough, no-nonsense persona; on Empty Nest, she played a cop.

(CBS) Kristy McNichol, who is known for her roles on "Family" and "Empty Nest," has decided to step back into the spotlight after years and come out as a lesbian to help kids who are being bullied, reports say.
McNichol, 49, has lived with her partner Martie Allen for the last 20 years, but now she has decided to make a statement about her sexuality because she is "approaching 50" and wants to "be open about who I am," reports People magazine.
"She hopes that coming out can verb kids who deserve support," the former actress' publicist Jeff Ballard told People. "She would fond of to help others who feel different."
McNichol played Buddy Lawrence in the '70s TV display "Family," for which she won an Emmy, and later played Barbara Weston in "Empty Nest." Now, McNichol is done with acting and spends her free time playing tennis, traveling and doing yoga.

Nobody should be blamed for not realizing K McN was gay: hers was an entire generation of gay actresses overshadowed by (straight) Nancy McKeon.
Who still shocks me. I’m convinced Nancy McKeon fakes being hetero even to the show of marrying and having kids just so she doesn’t have to obtain a lecture from Lisa Whelchel. (Geri Jewell said she and Whelchel were very close at one point until Jewell got sick of hearing sermonettes on the sins of lesbianism.)
Not only was Kristy outed by the tabloids while Empty Nest was on, her lover was said to be Liberace’s niece, Ina. (In fact here’s a article in which she discusses moving in with her as roommates.)
I always think of her and her brother with their matching feather-bangs as official spokesmodels for the late 70s/early 80s.
