I visited a gay nightclub with my friend in Zadar on the second night we were there. Croatia has a nearly homogeneously Catholic population, and homosexuality is still frowned upon. Burning of copies of a childrens guide depicting a lesbian couple took place very recently in Croatia; gay rights struggle for realization and LGBT relationships fairly secretive.
My friend and I are both queer students and specifically sought out the gay club to talk to people like ourselves abroad. We didnt realize what to predict, and found the club down and alleyway and up the stairs in an old churchyard-turned-apartment complex.
The guy who opened the door seemed to be the guy who lived there, the ‘club’ being one of his side rooms. inside the walls were stapled with crumpled gold-foil paper. Rotating Christmas lights bounced off the ceiling and the only people inside on a weekday late hours were four girls drinking orange soda around a table.
